Beautiful Home

On South Africa's Western Cape sits this stunning converted farmhouse called Pear Tree Farm..An East London couple and their four children share this beautiful home, which has no mobile reception and one landline used only for emergencies..I could get used to that! The couple have renovated many times and had quite exacting standards. But as they said, 'Taking on a project in the middle of nowhere, you quickly become less precious'. Have a lovely weekend xx

More kitchen..

Thank you for your lovely comments about our kitchen..it's so nice to share it with you. Here's the 'cooking' side of the kitchen..

I love the drawers. I told the designer I wanted drawers EVERYWHERE! In our old kitchen we had lots of cupboards, including a corner one that was so deep I could fit my whole body inside! I've used one of the top drawers for spices, the other for cups and the last one for coffee and tea..

I love the large cooktop - I'm able to fit more than one pot or frypan at a time! (Miele KM2054). The rangehood is very effective and has fantastic lighting. (Miele DA399)

I've always wanted two ovens.. The top oven (Miele H5040) is a 'combi oven' - microwave/oven. We use it as our everyday microwave and the heating is perfect. It can be a little noisy though - the glass tray vibrates at times! The larger oven (Miele H5240) is wonderful, my cakes are no longer lopsided.. Very easy to clean too.

We were able to put in a larger kitchen as we extended the entire room out 1700mm. I really love this kitchen but in an effort to tell you about any renovation 'mistakes' I made....

....I did have to go for function over form in this area, hence the unbalanced upper cabinetry. I also chose the wrong tiles - I would go for subway next time. And I'll never be sure about the glass doors..I did take them off and liked the open shelf look - but to adjust them to open shelves would be quite expensive. They can stay as they are for now!

The only other thing is the moulding - it's not high enough. It was thrown in at the last moment - when I was told I wasn't going to have any moulding at all. Just the cabinets meeting a bulkhead..not the look I wanted. The builder wasn't too happy when the bulkhead frames he'd just built had to be torn down..I showed the designer a picture of what I wanted but it's not what I got!

None of these things matter as we have a wonderful kitchen that we really enjoy every day. I prefer to be in here than anywhere else..More pics soon..xx

A little more of our kitchen..

I love this side of the kitchen, there's not much I would change if I did it all again. I've thought of perhaps changing the glass on the cabinets but that would require super organised and attractive contents.. something I might have time for in the future..The pantries have shallow shelves and the drawers are really useful for tins, packets and baking products.

Amongst the problems we experienced with our kitchen designer (who didn't actually design the kitchen, we did!), the fit of the fridge was one of them. When it came time for the plumber and builder to insert the fridge into its place, we found that it stuck out about 10cm. When I complained to the designer, he stated that I had never asked for the fridge to sit flush (flush meaning only the doors showing which is what we have now). Hmmm, if I had a dollar for every time I heard, "But you didn't ask for that" or "You didn't say that" during the renovation..

I asked him why I would bother spending a lot of money on a custom designed and made kitchen if the appliances didn't fit PERFECTLY. No response to that. And if he was honest, he would recall that I was emphatic about appliances fitting correctly after living with an enormous fridge sticking out in the old kitchen..

I persuaded the kitchen company to agree to our builder and plumber recessing the fridge into the wall. This required a bit of work as the wall was on two levels (our W.I.R. sits behind this cabinetry). It was worth it, it looks as it should now.

More kitchen soon..Happy Thursdayxx

Flooring Finale

Here is the final result..perfectly matched floors! The photo doesn't show the result very well, but they look great. Now on to the big task of cleaning all the sanding dust off EVERYTHING! I don't mind, it's nice to be home with the floors done! Will catch up with all of you soon..xx

Update

The flooring issue is resolving well so far..yesterday several of the lighter boards on the steps were replaced with darker ones, an instant improvement. I had a constructive conversation with the tradesman at fault which ended with his apologies and a lesson learned, which I appreciate. Today our no.1 flooring man will start sanding everything back to timber before applying several new coats. If that fails, I'll just paint them white..

I'm kidding..As much as I love white floors, they wouldn't suit my home..
The great thing about all this is that we get to have another little holiday (we can't stay in the house as the fumes are very strong). This time we'll be near the beach and not too far from the city.. And there are several lovely shops nearby..Happy Wednesday xx

Little Holiday

A few pics of our little holiday.. We stayed in a lovely cottage..

We visited the Hedgend maze and played a bit of mini golf..

And had a day at the snow..where we tobogganed and made a penguin..

We absolutely loved the snow and will definitely be back for a longer stay.

We also visited Marysville for lunch. This beautiful town and its beautiful people were devastated by the February 2009 bushfires. We'll never forget Black Saturday, it was so incredibly sad and very close to home.
Marysville Magic
I had visited Marysville several times and my grandparents honeymooned there. To see it almost completely wiped out was heartbreaking. The surrounding mountains are so scarred, it gave me a sense of just how enormous this fire was and how terrifying it must have been to be trapped in this beautiful little town.
Marysville Magic
But Marysville is literally rising from the ashes..it is being rebuilt and there is new life everywhere..

Maybe that's why our flooring problem isn't causing me any stress. After seeing families living in caravans on the site of their burnt down homes, I'm reminded what hardship is..

If you're in Victoria at any time, please support towns like Marysville with a visit..click here to find out more.

Oh, and thank you for all your helpful and interesting comments yesterday, I'm not surprised that many of you have had a similar experience. I definitely would have stayed here to supervise but the fumes were too strong! I have someone coming to redo the steps today, possibly..I have selected the timber myself! Happy Tuesday xx

A little lesson in flooring..

We came home today to find this..

What do you think? A little difference in colour perhaps? It's hard to believe it's the same species, in the same batch, delivered at the same time! And to make matters worse, the pieces chosen for the steps are the lightest in the entire lot!

The first call I made was to the man who sanded and polished the first lot of flooring. I trust his opinion and he did such a wonderful job (he wasn't available at the right time to do the second lot). He came straight over and told me that a fast seal had been used which LIGHTENS the wood! It's basically a cost/time cutting measure. I also learnt that only two coats have been applied using quite a cheap coating.

That answered the colour difference question.

What about the gaps? Yes, gaps between boards..

It can be due to major differences in temperature after the boards are laid. No.

It can be due to the boards not being cut properly at the mill. Hard to believe as our builder laid the first lot and they are all perfect. Every single one. And he had only ever laid floors once or twice before. Also, there are about 10 gaps, eliminating in my mind the possibility of the odd one or two not being cut properly at the mill.

It can be due to not clamping each board properly. Yep. I think that's the most likely.

When my husband phoned the current flooring man to discuss these issues, he was shouted at along with thinly veiled threats! Nice. He suggested that he would send a flooring association representative around to tell us how ridiculous we are. We welcome this, however, these industry bodies tend to protect their own and don't use common sense. They have a long list of 'accepted variables'. I think looking at the photo above, there is nothing acceptable about it. I do accept that the job done may be 'standard' in the industry, however, it was made very clear that we would like the floors to be the same as the others, otherwise what's the point? When you have an example right in front of you to work with, surely it's hard to find excuses. I really didn't think I had to have a detailed quote stating how many coats, the products used and oh, please don't LIGHTEN MY FLOORS! Wrong. Like everything in renovating, put it all in writing. Detailed writing.

We now face the annoying and expensive task of removing the boards on the steps and replacing them with some of the darker planks (the ones that should have been selected in the first place) and sanding the boards right back and polishing the entire area again. Which also involves having to move out for a few days again too..Even that doesn't guarantee that the floors will match the first area due to the lightening affect of the fast seal. We could also try the cheaper option of applying another coat with some tint in it, but we'd rather give it our best shot. With our no. 1 flooring man!

To be continued..

Signing Off

Visit Victoria
After a week of chest infections all round and the noise and dust of renovations, we're off to the snow.. I haven't experienced snow since I was 3 years old, my children have never seen it and my husband only a little in England, so we're all very excited!

This is what all the dust and noise is about.. getting rid of these tiles and continuing the floorboards on to the front door and into what will become the study/sitting room..

You can see why..

We had to stop at this line during the major renovations because up these steps is where we lived for 4 months while 3/4 of our house was demolished and rebuilt! We bought all the flooring required for stage 1 & 2 together - to ensure a colour match. It's been sitting in our garage for months..
The next stage will be to square up these arches, remove the ceiling roses (they just don't suit our 13 year old, newly renovated home!)..

..and divide this room in two, creating a study and a sitting room/home gym/yet to be negotiated room..the paint colours will have to change too!

I had planned to post a few more pics of the kitchen but it is slowly disappearing under a dust cloud..so we'll save that for next week. I'll leave you with a few images that have inspired me this week..Have a lovely few days, I'm looking forward to catching up with all of you when we get back xx
