Bathroom Renovation Mistakes Part I

The very amusing and talented Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan (of Home Heist) have listed their top five bathroom renovation disasters for Style At Home. Here is the first.. Carpets..

Carpets are harbingers of, ahem, fluids, so opt for wipe-clean surfaces like stone or ceramic. The worst case of bathroom carpeting we've seen was in a tiny London home where the owners had gone potty (excuse the bathroom pun) and carpeted the floor, bath panel and even window ledges.

To avoid mistake number 1.. some beautiful bathroom flooring.. which have you used or are you considering?

Oh Rachael, it is at times like these that I realise just how much I miss having pay TV! I love Colin & Justin and this post gave me such a giggle!! We have the standard federation style white and burgundy tiles that match our burgundy claw foot bath...ergh!!! In August I am ripping up the tiles and replacing them with white painted timber:) Might even lay underfloor heating strips too:) Lovely inspiration pics, thank you so much for sharing. Hope you have a fabulous Wednesday ~ Tina x

Oh i like the Carrara marble in the herringbone pattern the best. I cannot figure out who would ever dream of carpeting their bathroom.
Thanks for stopping by

As a fellow Brit (like Colin and Justin) I agree wholeheartedly that carpets are a no no in the bathroom. I don't know why typically UK houses do have carpeted bathrooms but its very rare to find one without carpet. Even brand new housing developments come with carpets and even have them in their show home bathrooms. Yuk! We have a new home and have ripped out all the carpets - we have oak in the downstairs loo, wood floorboards in our ensuite and wood effect vinyl in the main bathroom (used by the children).
If I could choose any flooring it woule be the hexagonal tile flooring or the traditional (hex and flower pattern) as we don't really see this type of tile in the UK and I just love it.

Hi Rachael,
What beautiful images you have found! I have to say there are a lot of wonderful flooring choices so it's hard to pick just one. I recently did a house for a builder and we used the hexagonal tiles. The room looked great and the tile was a hit. I have laid over-sized subway tiles in a herringbone pattern and that made such a statement. Carrera marble is also a wonderful choice, especially if you are going for a very traditional look. So many great choices....it's so hard to pick. Good luck with that :) !!
I hope you are having a wonderful day!

BTW, I like your cat's personality! He's very cute :)

Wood is gentle under foot, but I dream a little of limestone with underfloor heating (because I HAVE wood!).

Also love the Australian way of having a drain in the floor, so sensible~

Of course I couldn't possibly comment on anything vaguely 'bathroom-y' Rachael, except that this week while I'm away working up here in Darwin a certain MOTH had better be tiling ours like he's never tiled before!!! Lovely pics to drool over - & thanks for the 'wonderful' memories of shag pile in the bathroom!

I adore slate - one of the few materials that is versatile from high polished glamor to charming country rustication (and everywhere in between). Plus, the texture is delicious!
